Propulsion Systems

Thoroughly proven.

The list of ships equipped with AMB propulsion bearing systems reads like the history of the US Naval fleet. In additional to great contributions to our US and allied Navies, AMB has been contracted to design, engineer, and manufacture propulsion bearing systems for other vessels used in: Research, Search & Rescue, Homeland Security, Prototype/Experimental Vessels, and other special mission applications. Shown below are some of the ship/submarine classes equipped with AMB bearing propulsion systems.

Lineshaft Bearings

AMB began engineering and producing oil lubricated bearings in 1921 and has since established itself as the premier engineering manufacturer of oil lubricated bearings to the US Navy and our allies throughout the world. We can accommodate shaft sizes ranging from 8 inches to over 40 inches.

Stern Tube & Strut Bearings

AMB designs, engineers, and manufactures many types of water lubricated bearings weighing up to and over 40,000 pounds for both commercial and military uses. These bearings are manufactured in stave and partial arc systems for: conventional & nuclear powered submarines, naval surface vessels, and other industrial equipment.

Thrust Bearings

We can design and build thrust bearings to meet specific needs for propulsion shafting and industrial equipment. The USCGC Healy, the Coast Guard’s largest and most technologically advanced icebreaker, is a good example.

The thrust bearings have withstood the most rigorous testing having been employed on an icebreaker operating in the northern waters of Alaska and the Bering Sea for many years. AMB is capable of producing a tilting pad thrust bearing for your needs whether it is small in weight, or over 30,000 pounds.

Advanced Liner Technology

AMB engineers application specific bearing liners for various naval and industrial applications. Liners can be tested in house to ensure optimum performance either with full/partial scale testing or finite element analysis. We can incorporate these upgrades into new ship class designs, as well as retrofit previously babbitted bearing systems. Synthetic liners offer the benefit of having little to no environmental impact and can be replaced on site with the shaft in place.
